4 key ways for integrating PrestaShop with external systems

PrestaShop API integration

PrestaShop offers an extensive API that allows the exchange of almost all standard e-commerce data and can be extended with non-standard elements. The key is for most of the work to happen on the side of the integrated system; at Waynet we then act as consultants, identify and extend endpoints and help with testing. At large scale, API-only integrations can cause performance problems, which is why we often recommend the next method.

Ready-made integrators

There are many ready-made integrators for PrestaShop on the market (modules or API tools). If their features match the store’s needs, they are usually a cheaper solution than a dedicated integration. The downside: they often can’t be modified, and in the event of a failure you depend on the vendor, making a quick response and further development harder.

File-based integration

Exchanging data via XML/CSV files is a simple and cheap method that works in many cases. With large volumes (thousands of SKUs, hundreds of orders a day) it can put a strain on the store, and updates (e.g. of stock levels) may not be in real time.

Logs, delta sync and error handling

Three practices often overlooked in ready-made solutions:

Logs: every synchronisation is recorded; on error, a record of what failed and when (easier diagnostics).
Differential mechanism: sending only data changed since the last synchronisation (faster, less server load).
Error handling: a well-thought-out response of the store to errors or unavailability of the external system.

How do you integrate PrestaShop with an external system? +

There are three main routes: the PrestaShop API, a ready-made integrator (module) and exchanging XML/CSV files. The choice depends on scale, synchronisation frequency and budget. For larger stores we recommend API integration with a differential mechanism and logging.

API, a ready-made integrator or files: which to choose? +

A ready-made integrator is the cheapest when its features are enough, but it is often closed to changes. Files are simple but scale poorly with large volumes. The API offers the greatest flexibility and performance. Choosing the method is part of the analysis before implementation.

Can PrestaShop be integrated when a tool has no official module? +

Yes, in that case we build a dedicated integration (custom module) using the API or files, with logs, a differential mechanism and error handling.

How do you integrate PrestaShop with an ERP (Comarch, Subiekt, SAP)? +

We most often carry out ERP integrations via the API with a differential mechanism, synchronising products, stock, prices, orders and documents. This is especially important in the B2B platform model, where the ERP is at the heart of the processes.

What if the integration slows the store down? +

At large scale, integrations can put a strain on the store. In that case we implement a differential mechanism, queuing and caching, and track down bottlenecks as part of PrestaShop optimisation.

Do you maintain integrations after implementation? +

Yes, integrations need looking after (provider API changes, updates). We cover them with ongoing technical support (WayCare), with monitoring and response to failures.
